ChainDrive™ Development

Some products actually develop themselves! The ChainDrive is one of them. We had developed the SubMix 4 x 1 mixer thinking that it would be great to combine multiple sources such as keyboards or effects together. This got us thinking... how about a way to divide the signal so that it could feed 4 different audio devices simultaneously?

The ChainDrive is in fact a convenience module designed to add connectivity options for the more creative engineer. Plug in just about any type of audio source and the ChainDrive spits it out - times four. Unique to the ChainDrive is that it can manage balanced and unbalanced signals, and is also able to accept a stereo source and then deliver four stereo outputs! This not only opens the door to new creative options in the studio, but enables you to use the ChainDrive in commercial installations where feeding multiple zones may be needed.

The ChainDrive is easy to use, 100% compatible with older 500 series racks, and incorporates an unbalanced to balanced converter when housed in a Workhorse and connected via the Omniport.

Some of the fun applications to consider are:

  • Parallel processing audio signals
Combining a dry track with one that is compressed or has distortion can easily be done by feeding the ChainDrive a dry signal and then splitting the signal off to feed various processors while retaining the original dry track. Mix to suit!
  • Multi-band compression
Maximizing control over dynamics can be achieved by compressing various portions of the signal by inserting an EQ in the side-chain to selectively compress certain frequencies. This results in a much more realistic sounding compression.
  • Reamping to multiple guitar amps & effects
Take a pre-recorded track and feed it to a bunch of guitar pedals and amps at the same time! The ChainDrive lets you adjust the signal for each output so that you can create interesting sonic landscapes.
  • Feeding various processors simultaneously
Send in a stereo signal and the ChainDrive will feed up to four stereo processors at the same time. Imagine stacking pre-delay, room reverb, spring reverb and EQ and mixing them to create the perfect blend!

  • Feeding four stereo systems at once
Use the ChainDrive to feed four stereo speaker sets for distributed audio in a commercial sound installation. This can be in a restaurant with multiple rooms, a banquet hall or even a night club
  • Creating a 4 x 4 matrix with SubMix
Combine a ChainDrive with a Radial SubMix to create a true 4 x 4 matrix. This lets you generate four stems and then bring them back using only two module spaces in your rack!
