It seems that the J48™ and PZ-DI are somewhat similar. Can the PZ-DI replace the J48?

Yes and no. There is no question that the PZ-DI adds extra features such as a selectable load, variable high-pas filter and low-pass filter. But for many sound engineers, extra features only mean more trouble! In the hands of the inexperienced, the J48 may be a better choice. The J48 is also equipped with a merge function that lets you take a stereo signal and mix it to mono which can save valuable channels!

If the PZ-DI is set to 220k-ohms, will it sound the same as the J48?

Yes. The PZ-DI is basically a variation on the J48.

What happens if I connect the left-right outputs from my keyboard to the PZ-DI?

It is difficult to say. In some cases it may work whereby the two will mix to mono. In other cases, the two signals may suffer from phase cancellation.

If lifting the ground usually means lifting pin-1 on the XLR, will this not cut off 48V phantom power?

With other direct boxes, this is how it works. But with the PZ-DI, the ground lifting occurs on the inside of the circuit at the power supply. So we enjoy the noise reducing benefit of ground lifting while still being connected to phantom power.

Is there a way to bypass high-pass filter?

When the high-pass filter control is turned completely counter-clockwise, it is essentially dialled out of the circuit as it only rolls off inaudible frequencies below 5Hz.

Can I power the PZ-DI with an external supply or battery?

No. The PZ-Di is designed to work with phantom power only.

Can I use both the HPF and LPF filters at the same time?

Yes. This creates a band-pass filter which can be very effective with certain instruments. Try, test, experiment!

How does the PZ-DI compare to the PZ-Pre™?

The PZ-DI is in some ways, a pared down version of the PZ-Pre. The PZ-DI is designed to transfer the signal as faithfully as possible to the audio engineer and allow him to tailor the sound as needed. The PZ-Pre is designed to give the artist more hands-on control over his or her sound on stage.

Can I harm the PZ-DI by connecting an active source to it?

No… the PZ-DI is a like any DI box – it can be used with both passive and active sources.
